JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The at is committed to innovative teaching and promotes active student-centered learning. We are seeking someone who can contribute to the instructional mission in our undergraduate program. Our goal is to create an integrated undergraduate experience, including lecture, lab, peer mentoring, and research.

Biology invites applications for a non-tenure line assistant/associate teaching professor starting in Fall 2024. Teaching responsibilities will include our introductory undergraduate lecture and laboratory course in Function and Development of Organisms (BIOL 240W). This course emphasizes an integrated approach to the comparative physiology of both plants and animals/humans. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in plant and/or animal/human physiology as well as laboratory teaching experience in these areas. Other teaching responsibilities can include introductory or upper-level undergraduate biology courses within the candidate’s area of expertise. Candidates should have experience with using active learning and other best practices in large lecture settings.

Biology teaching faculty at PSU are typically on 36-week appointments with a 15-credit equivalency. Additional responsibilities may include recruiting and training laboratory teaching assistants and lecture learning assistants to be effective members of an instructional team, creating/implementing inquiry-based class exercises, and assisting with curriculum design and assessment. This position is initially for the 2024/2025 academic year and will be evaluated for renewal and extension after successful completion of year one. Innovative, effective contributions to the instructional mission of the department can lead to continuation in a multiyear appointment. Promotion through instructional ranks is available for this position.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree. Ph.D. is preferred in a Biological field with some experience publishing original research and at least two years of teaching experience in relevant courses. A demonstrated interest in pedagogy and the application of research-based teaching methods is highly desirable. Undergraduate teaching experience that implements active learning strategies is required and documented excellence in teaching is important.
