Associate Director, Center for Student Success and Retention
The Associate Director provides critical leadership within the newly formed Center for Student Success and Retention in developing and leading all aspects of academic enrichment services for our students. Collaborate with the Dean and Executive Director on initiatives to support students’ success and meet our enrollment, persistence and graduation goals. Lead peer tutoring; peer success coaching; supplemental instruction; learning and college success workshops; study groups; review sessions; and group tutoring opportunities. Serve as a proactive ambassador for CSSR to faculty and campus constituencies and collaborate with them to help create a culture of intellectual curiosity, students helping students, and self-determination. Please note: roles of all members of CSSR staff will evolve as research indicates how to best support students; we will also leverage team members’ skills and expertise to evolve roles in student-focused ways.
The Associate Director reports to the Dean of Student Success and Retention.
The Associate Director will: * Coordinate and administer academic enrichment services, including individual and group peer tutoring; supplemental instruction; study groups and study spaces.
- Teach up to four credits of relevant course work per calendar year.
- Consult with faculty and academic departments to identify barriers to student success, maximize impact of peer educator services and recommend interventions. Reinforce and support students’ relationships with their faculty instructors and academic advisors. Solicit faculty for tutoring candidate nominations.
- Collaborate with student employees and campus partners to research, develop, conduct and assess learning and college success workshops in academic strategies and college success skills and mindsets.
- Recruit students to become peer tutors and success coaches. Develop and deliver training and ongoing professional development for peer educators. Supervise and assess their effectiveness to maximize institutional impact and experiential learning for student staffers.
- Track usage of all peer educator services; document student interactions with the Center; contribute to monthly progress reports for CSSR. Conduct rigorous ongoing assessment to inform improvements and impact on students we serve.
- Represent CSSR at admissions and yield events and on select campus committees. Serve as a liaison to campus partners such as the Office of Extended Studies, the Ithaca Seminar Program and the Center for Faculty Excellence to educate students and campus constituencies about, and increase usage of, success center services.
- Collaborate with CSSR staff to: develop and administer marketing campaigns to increase campus awareness and usage of center services; educate students about collegiate academic expectations; and develop a suite of online student resources for collegiate success.
- Participate in CSSR proactive outreach to students identified to be at risk. Refer students to appropriate campus partners.
- Prepare budget recommendations and monitor and reconcile expenditure of funds budgeted for peer education services.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Participate in professional development provided by the Center and other campus partners.
- Pursue professional development and scholarly activity in fields that encompass peer education, tutoring and student success; expand knowledge of emerging and best practices; and share findings with colleagues.
- Stay current with changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, deadlines, important dates, costs, college-wide initiatives, and transfer requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a full-time position that requires occasional evening and weekend work as student’s schedules, admissions and success programs dictate (some schedule flexibility available). Regular presence on campus is required; remote flexibility is available for up to 20% of time (or one day a week), negotiable.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree; experience working directly with college students; demonstrated understanding of academic issues of undergraduate students and ability to provide academic success services to students with a variety of needs; ability to develop authentic, motivating connections with student employees while maintaining appropriate boundaries; skill in communicating via text, phone, video calls and in person; positive motivation to meet performance metrics; eager commitment to learning and exploiting new technologies; positivity and persistence in the face of resistance; commitment to diversity and experience working with underrepresented students; commitment to maintain confidentiality; highly developed time management, organizational, verbal and written communication skills; desire and ability to work in a collaborative, team environment; innovative, creative and flexible.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate degree; experience administering student support center; working with peer educators; supervision of student workers and/or volunteers; student coaching or counseling; motivational interviewing and skill in persuading students to act in their best interests; an understanding of methods that foster cohesiveness and inclusivity among college-age populations; Banner (or other student information management systems), Slate (or other CRMs), Drupal (or other website software), Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel; any student success or advising software; academically at-risk students; developmental and appreciative models of advising.
