Job Description

Job title: AVID Tutor – 2 to 3 hours daily

Job description: Positions have flexibile hours between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. College students are encouraged to apply!

This position pays $15.00 per hour.

Purpose: College students and community professionals serve as tutors facilitating small, subject area specific groups that are collaborative in nature and designed to help students internalize and apply their learning in rigorous college preparatory coursework. To accomplish these tasks, the tutor works closely with the staff and administration of USD 253.

Responsible to: Principal

Payment rate: As established by the Emporia Board of Education

Qualifications:

1. Must be currently enrolled as a full time college student.

2. Must complete 16 hours of paid tutor training.

3. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.

4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Functions:

1. Become familiar with specific routines and materials used in the program.

2. Become familiar with textbooks/materials used by students in their classes.

3. Work with students individually and in small groups in subject areas based upon their class/text notes.

4. Assess student notes/discussions to determine concepts that need to be studied/re-taught.

5. Conduct brainstorming/cluster sessions employing Socratic questioning techniques.

6. Evaluate required student binders, calendars, class/text notes etc.

7. Conduct mini-lessons in the writing process, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.

8. Contact classroom teachers with respect to course outlines/assignment schedules etc. as directed by the coordinator.

9. Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in the sessions.

10. Communicate regularly with the coordinator regarding student progress.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.

2. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.

3. Occasionally requires stooping, bending, and reaching.

4. Occasionally requires balancing.

5. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.

6. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

General Responsibilities:

1. Support and facilitate the mission and vision of the Emporia Public Schools.

2. Support the ongoing development/revision, implementation, and monitoring/assessment of curriculum as outlined by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.

3. Obtain equipment, resources and materials through processes outlined by the Assistant Superintendent of Business.

4. Support policies and practices for licensed and classified personnel through processes outlined by the Associate Superintendent of Personnel.

5. Effectively utilize the expertise of other district professionals and/or outside consultants to support the efficient and effective operation of district processes/systems.

6. Provide for the safety/general welfare of students at all times.

7. Develop and maintain documentation relative to program funding (i.e. grants and awards).

8. Stay abreast of new technologies to facilitate and support student learning, data management, and communication with respect to best practice.

9. Comply with legal and regulatory requirements as provided by state and federal law.

10. Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules/regulations including but not limited to:

  • Acceptable use of technology
  • Sexual and racial harassment
  • Child abuse reporting
  • Health and safety including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan

11. Communicate effectively with administrators, parents, staff, and community organizations with regard to student progress/needs.

12. Interact with students, parents, and staff in a professional manner demonstrating tolerance of individual differences, patience, and sensitivity.

13. Demonstrate professionalism through appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance; accurate recordkeeping and timely submission of required reports; participate in building/district level committee tasks, etc.

14. Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.

15. Maintain safe and well-organized workspaces.

16. Be prepared to implement the Building Crisis Plan; actively participate in response drills.

17. Respond to change in a productive manner.

18. Strive to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.

19. Other duties as assigned.
