Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, some evening/weekend hours
SALARY: Anticipated starting salary is $47,597.00 – $50,000.00. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement. Full time benefited employees at North Shore Community College are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package offered through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Working closely with the Dean of Liberal Studies, The Director of ESL Navigation, the English as a Second Language Department, admissions, and advising, the ESL Achievement Coach is responsible for providing a broad range of services in support of noncredit and credit ESL students. The Achievement Coach will help with student recruitment, initiate student contact to ensure student success, counsel students on attendance and other issues, research and evaluate available community services in assisting students to remove barriers to successful learning, and develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assists advising efforts in student recruitment and registration processes; serves as liaison between students, deans, Director of ESL Navigation, faculty, admissions, and advising staff.
- Analyzes and interprets student data and placement results; maintains a confidential database of active case files.
- Implements intrusive advising practices to identify and support credit and noncredit students at-risk of failing or withdrawing from courses
- Advises Dual Language credit and noncredit students about certificate and degree requirements, appropriate academic course loads, and course selection; helps students make academic decisions.
- Assists in implementing retention activities, such as emailing or making phone calls to current or prospective students, collecting or reviewing data to be compiled (such as retention/attrition reports, recruitment reports, etc.)
- Participates in college programs for professional development and advisor training
- Refers students, as necessary, to other College offices and other support services, such as tutoring, accessibility services, and career services
- Provides referrals and support for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises which may impact school performance
- Supports orientation programs and participates in open houses, information sessions, and registration events
- Perform other duties as assigned
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of ESL Navigation
Requirements:
- B.A. degree or equivalent degree/experience required; one or more years of direct community college ESL experience and evidence of biliteracy preferred.
- Dedicated to community college student success and committed to the values of access, equity, and inclusion
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
- Strong presentation/instructional skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent public relations and telephone skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional academic environment
- Fluency in a language in addition to English highly preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate good judgment, tact and courtesy
- Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and work independently
- Successfully passing a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment
