NCEC was launched in September 2020 by the North Carolina State Board of Education and the Office of the Governor to connect caring adults to students to eliminate barriers to opportunity and unlock student potential. Now as an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, NCEC partners with schools to recruit, train, and coach corps members who work for schools as high-impact tutors.
Why high-impact tutoring? NCEC was created to support school personnel and students during COVID-19 and beyond. COVID-19 exacerbated challenges that have long existed in North Carolina. For example, prior to the pandemic data showed that only 36% of North Carolina’s fourth graders could read at or above grade level. State results for the past two years showed young readers in North Carolina falling even further behind due to lost instructional time and added stressors.
High-impact tutoring is an evidence-based approach used to accelerate student learning. As high-impact tutors, NCEC corps members provide targeted 1-on-1 to 1-on-3 support to students to extend the reach of teachers and accelerate student growth. For now, all corps members work with K-5 students to help the students master foundational skills for learning how to read. In 2023-2024, NCEC will pilot tutoring supports for foundational math skills in elementary school. It’s life-changing for students and for corps members.

Job Summary
The Learning Coach’s primary responsibility is to support corps members and schools in implementing This position supports a cohort of corps members, developing them as high-impact tutors within their schools and coordinating with schools to ensure corps members have the schedule, resources, and training they need to be successful. This position works directly with school staff to ensure that corps members have the resources and support needed for high-impact tutoring.
The National Student Support Accelerator defines high-impact tutoring as having the following characteristics: substantial time each week of required tutoring, sustained and strong relationships between students and their tutors, close monitoring of student knowledge and skills, alignment with school curriculum, and oversight of tutors to assure quality interactions. Responsibilities
Coach corps members to become high-impact tutors within their schools
- Provide onboarding support to corps members and schools, helping ensure a timely transition from the hiring process to the start of tutoring in schools.
- Coach corps members in 1×1 and small group sessions and conduct site visits with follow-up feedback. Focus areas for coaching include effective strategies for:
o establishing strong relationships with administrators and teachers
o establishing strong relationships with young children
o engaging young students
o fostering social-emotional learning in tutoring sessions
o early grades instruction across multiple subject areas (starting with early literacy in 2023-2024)
- Follow up with Corps Members to ensure that they have completed NCEC coursework and connecting them with tech support if needed.
- Facilitate a Professional Learning Community for corps members with monthly sessions and ongoing professional learning
- Ensure that corps members are utilizing the NCEC tutoring log each day of tutoring to manage student tutoring records, communicate student progress, and monitor and adjust tutoring to the high-impact model
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of coaching sessions with corps members using platforms such as HubSpot and Microsoft Office Suite
Support partner schools’ implementation of high-impact tutoring in the following ways:
- Participate in monthly implementation meetings with the NCEC school partnership’s manager and district administrators
- Serve as point of contact for and maintain communication with key staff at each school where corps members are working
- Promote the high-impact tutoring framework with school staff and help the school troubleshoot areas such as dosage, small groupings, and curriculum resources
- Become familiar with the local curriculum resources and, where possible, engage with the curriculum training that the district/school provides the corps members
- Contribute to the fall and spring implementation check-ins facilitated by the NCEC school partnership manager
Help recruit and place the strongest possible team of corps members in partner schools
- Attend info sessions and open houses
- Leverage your network to share about NCEC openings and referral opportunities
- Collaborate with the NCEC recruitment team and the school district’s team to ensure communication is clear between corps member candidates and their placement schools throughout the hiring, school placement, and onboarding process.
Perform other related duties as requested and as responsibilities dictate.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- At least five years of experience achieving ambitious outcomes as a classroom teacher
- Experience coaching adults, holding a leadership position and/or leading professional development in an informal or formal capacity.
- Highly organized and highly detail-oriented, with strong project management and organization skills; able to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace (e.g., Google Drive), Zoom, and be able to pick up other applications, such as PowerSchool and HubSpot, quickly
Qualifications Preferred
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Educators who have deep subject area content knowledge (i.e. science of reading, foundational math)
- Experienced grade level leads, reading/math interventionists, and instructional coaches

Additional Information
Target start date is on or before September 2023. This coach will serve the northeastern region of North Carolina (Halifax, Nash, & Hertford) and possibly adjacent counties to the region. This is primarily a remote position, but regular, local travel is required for in-person visits at your assigned corps members’ school and quarterly in-person sessions at the Raleigh office.
Pay and Benefits
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $58,800-$69,581 per year, depending on experience. This is a 12-month position. The position will receive generous company benefits, including company-paid health, dental, vision, life, STD and LTD insurance coverages, Flex Spending Account (FSA), 401k with matching, 10 paid holidays, paid sick leave, paid bereavement leave, 15 days of paid annual leave.
