Salary
During the Police Academy, Torrance Police Officer Recruits / Trainees are paid $7,280 per month plus the City contributes up to $1470.96 per month for family health care coverage and a one-time uniform allowance of $850.
Upon graduation of the Police Academy, Torrance Police Officers begin making $7644 per month.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Employment Standards
- Education: High school graduation (A California high school equivalency certificate or GED is acceptable.)
- License: A valid California Driver’s License.
- Vision: 20/50 corrected to 20/20, each eye. Normal color perception.
- Age: At least 21 years of age at time of application.
- Citizenship: Must be United States citizen or resident alien who has applied for citizenship one year prior to filing for position.
- Physical Requirements: Applicant must be in good physical condition and free from disability or defects. Height and weight must be in proper proportion subject to determination by the City medical examiner.

*SUBMITTING POST T-SCORES:
- The City of Torrance uses the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery PELLET-B and will accept scores from other agencies within one year of the written test date. The passing T-score for the City of Torrance is 44.2. Candidates who have taken the POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLET-B) examination at another agency and have received a T-score of 44.2 or higher within the last 12 months must attach a copy of their T-score to their employment application.
- POST allows candidates to test only once in a 30 day period. Applicants may not take the POST written test if taken with another agency within the last 30 days of the City of Torrance scheduled written test.

Applicants may test for this position only once in a six (6) month period. Names of candidates successful in the examination process will be retained on an Eligible List (a list for hire) for a period of three (3) months.

Candidates must pass each component of the exam process, as well as a thorough background investigation to be considered for hire. The background investigation will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical and psychological evaluations, drug screening and a polygraph.
